Retreat Teaching

"A Guide to the Bodhisattvas Way of Life" by Shantideva. It is a manual for awakening the Great Heart.

Bodhisattvas are beings who vow to assist all beings out of suffering for as long as time & space exist.

We are all capable of expanding our hearts to this level. For centuries, monasteries relied on this text to teach compassion. It is one of the great pieces of literature and as fresh today with pith advice as it was long ago.

Good teachers know deep in their hearts the boundlessness of the Way. They also know their own pettiness and lack of compassion as compared to the height and breadth of the Way.

Accordingly, good teachers do not put on airs. True teachers cannot be

recognized by appearance.

Only true teachers tell us things we do not like to hear.

Without assuming any authority, they dress plainly and live in simple dwellings, making the Way their teacher, the Dharma their teacher.

Single-mindedly, they continue to seek and practice the Way. Dogen
